ALL ALBUMS REVIEWED BY MIKE SLUTZ the wanabe GUTTER PUNK 1-12 FROM 1997, 13-30 FROM 1996

1. TESTED, BY BAD RELIGION. BAD RELIGION'S REVOLUTIONARY LIVE ALBUM. THE TECHNIQUE USED TO RECORD THIS ALBUM IS ORIGINAL AND CREATES A BETTER IDEA OF THE SOUND AT A REAL SHOW. THE ALBUM IS SOLID, FEATURING SONGS FROM EVERY ALBUM, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF INTO THE UNKNOWN. THREE NEW STUDIO TRACKS ARE ADDED AS AN EXTRA BONUS. CRUCIAL CUTS: AMERICAN JESUS, 10 IN 2010, AND PART III. TRULY A GREAT ALBUM FOR ALL BAD RELIGION FANS. 3.5 STARS

2. AMERICAN PSYCHO, BY THE MISFITS. THIS ALBUM, DESPITE THE FACT DANZIG IS NOT SINGING, IS ACTUALLY QUITE SOLID. STARTING OUT WITH THE DARK ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES, AND EXPLODING INTO HIGH-OCTANE SONGS LIKE AMERICAN PSYCHO AND CRIMSON GHOST, THIS ALBUM WILL KEEP YOU RUNNING BACK TO THE STEREO TO TURN THE VOLUME UP LOUDER. VOCALIST MICHALE GRAVES DOES A GOOD JOB TRYING TO FILL IN FOR DANZIG, BUT IT IS STILL NOT THE SAME. 3 STARS

3. 88 FINGERS UP YOUR ASS, BY 88 FINGERS LOUIE. THIS WAS SUCH A GREAT BAND, IT REALLY IS A SHAME THEY BROKE UP. THIS ALBUM COMBINES MOST OF THEIR 7"S AND 10"S AND VARIOUS OTHER TRACKS. THE LINER NOTES TELL THE STORY OF 88 FINGERS AND ITS DECLINE. WITH 27 TRACKS TOTAL, INCLUDING TOO MANY, ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS, AND VERA, THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE. 4.5 STARS

4. THE STORY OF THE BOLLWEEVILS, BY THE BOLLWEEVILS. ANOTHER GREAT CHICAGO BAND, THIS ONE IS COMPILING THEIR LEGACY JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT. THE ALBUM CONTAINS TAKES FROM THEIR ORIGINAL RED TAPE, WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND, AND OTHER EPS AND 7"S. WITH OVER AN HOUR OF CHICAGO-STYLE MELODIC HARDCORE, THIS ALBUM IS GREAT FOR ALL WHO WISH TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE BOLLWEEVILS. 4 STARS

5. GRATEFUL..., BY DEAD FUCKING LAST. DFL'S LAST ALBUM, RELEASED ONLY MONTHS BEFORE THEIR BREAKUP. THIS ALBUM RULES. GREAT HARDCORE AND MULTIMEDIA FUNCTIONS. WITH CHANTS OF, "WE ARE THE DEAD!" AND "LA'S ONLY TRUE HARDCORE BAND!" DFL ROCKS YOUR WORLD. HAS SOME WEIRD NON-HARDCORE TRACKS, BUT IT'S WORTH GETTING. 3.5 STARS

6. FULL CIRCLE, BY PENNYWISE. PENNYWISE'S LATEST ALBUM DEDICATED TO JASON MATTHEW THIRSK, THEIR LATE BASSIST AND FRIEND. A SOLID ALBUM ALL AROUND, WELL PRODUCED WITHOUT SOUNDING OVERPRODUCED. PENNYWISE LETS ALL THEIR EMOTION OUT ON A REMIX OF THE BRO HYMN, FEATURING GUEST VOCALS AND DRUMMING BY JASON'S BROTHER. THE HIDDEN TRACK IS A PIANO PLAYING THE INTRO TO THE UNKNOWN ROAD, AND IT LASTS A LONG TIME. A GOOD ALBUM, A MUST FOR TRUE PENNYWISE FANS. 4 STARS

7. BUILT TO LAST, BY SICK OF IT ALL. SIOA HAS DONE IT AGAIN. ONCE AGAIN THEY HAVE PROVEN THAT HARDCORE IS NOT DEAD. STARTING OUT WITH GOOD LOOKING OUT, AND BLASTING ITS WAY THROUGH THE SWATH OF HARDCORE POSEURS WITH SONGS LIKE BUSTED, BUILT TO LAST PROVES THAT SIOA REALLY IS BUILT TO LAST. A GREAT INTRO FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO THE NYC HARDCORE SCENE, AND A REFRESHING REMINDER FOR THOSE WHO GREW UP IN IT. 4.5 STARS

8. UNLEASHED, BY TEN FOOT POLE. TEN FOOT POLE'S FIRST ALBUM SANS VOCALIST SCOTT "PULLMYFINGER" RADINSKY. SCOTT LEFT THE BAND TO PLAY BASEBALL, AND TEN FOOT POLE NEVER LOOKED BACK. DENNIS TAKES OVER VOCALS, AND DOES A DECENT JOB. GREAT SONGS LIKE FICTION, JOHN, AND ADD GIVE WAY TO SOME ACCOUSTIC SONGS, DEPRIVING THE ALBUM OF SOME OF ITS TENACITY. GREAT ALBUM COVER AND A DECENT ALBUM. 2.5 STARS

9. PLASTIQUE VALENTINE, BY THE HUMPERS. ANOTHER SOLID ALBUM. THE HUMPERS HAVE COME UP WITH AN ALBUM THAT EXPRESSES FEELING EVERYBODY HAS FELT, BETRAYAL AND BROKEN LOVE. GOOD SONGS LIKE PLASTIQUE VALENTINE AND MUTATE WITH ME GRACE THIS EPITAPH ALBUM. 3 STARS

10. IXNAY ON THE HOMBRE, BY THE OFFSPRING. PROOF THAT THE OFFSPRING CAN STILL PLAY PUNK WHEN THEY WANT TO. NO COME OUT AND PLAY HERE. THE DISCLAIMER IS SPOKEN BY JELLO BIAFRA AND IS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. THEN THE MUSIC KICKS IN WITH THE MEANING OF LIFE. AFTER THE INTERMISSION, ALL I WANT KICKS YOUR ASS AND PROVES THE OFFSPRING ARE NOT JUST SELF ESTEEM WANKERS. THE ALBUM FEATURES SOME NOT SO PUNK TRACKS, BUT STILL IS A GOOD ALBUM. 3 STARS

11. TWENTY-EIGHT TEETH, BY BUCK-O-NINE. A GOOD SKA ALBUM FOR THOSE WHO LIKE PUNK-SKA. NOT BEING INTO SKA ALL THAT MUCH, I DON'T LIKE THIS ALBUM TOO MUCH. ROUND KID IS A GOOD TRACK AND SO IS I'M THE MAN, A COVER OF A SONG BY JOE JACKSON. A DEFINATE MUST FOR ALL PUNK-SKA FANATICS. 2 STARS

12. GIVE 'EM THE BOOT, COMP. ON HELLCAT RECORDS. ONCE AGAIN, I'M NOT ONE WHO LIKES SKA, AND THIS ALBUM IS ALMOST ENTIRELY SKA. IT HAS A SLOW, PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACK BY RANCID, A TRACK FROM UNION 13, AND A TRACK FROM THE U.S. BOMBS. THE REST IS PRETTY MUCH SKA. TOO MANY PIANOS, BUT, HEY, IT'S PRETTY CHEAP. 0.5 STARS

13. THE GRAY RACE, BY BAD RELIGION. BAD RELIGION'S LATEST STUDIO RELEASE IS A GOOD ONE. FEATURING MALIGNED SONGS LIKE A WALK, AS WELL AS KICK ASS SONGS LIKE THE PUNK ROCK SONG AND TEN IN 2010. THE ALBUM COMES IN MULTIPLE COVERS, ALL HAVING PICTURES IN GRAY SCALE. THE FIRST ALBUM WITHOUT MR. BRETT SHOWS SOME OF BAD RELIGION'S MATURITY AS THEY GO INTO EPIC SONGS LIKE THE STREETS OF AMERICA. A GOOD ALBUM, EVEN ON A MAJOR LABEL. 3.5 STARS

14. THE DOM YEARS, BY 88 FINGERS LOUIE. ANOTHER GREAT RELEASE BY 88 FINGERS. THIS ONE IS A COMPILATION OF SOME OF THE TRACKS THEY RECORDED WITH ORIGINAL DRUMMER DOM VALLONE. WITH TRACKS LIKE IN THE JOHN AND GO AWAY, 88 FINGERS SHOWS WHY THEY WERE ONE OF THE ELITE CHICAGO MELODIC HARDCORE BANDS. 88 FINGERS SHOWS SOME OF THEIR UNUSUAL HUMOR IN THIS, BUT IT ONLY HAS 11 TRACKS. 3.5 STARS

15. VERY PROUD OF YA, BY AFI. A GOOD ALBUM FROM AFI ON NITRO RECORDS. THE ALBUM STARTS OFF STRONG WITH HE WHO LAUGHS LAST... AND FILE 13, BUT CAN'T KEEP UP IN LATER TRACKS. AFI REALLY IS A BAND THAT IS BETTER LIVE THAN ON AN ALBUM. THE MUSIC IS HARD AND FAST AND THE VOCALS LOUD AND WHINEY, BUT IT STILL IS A GOOD ALBUM WITH 20 TRACKS. 3 STARS

16. IMAGE IS EVERYTHING, BY JUGHEAD'S REVENGE. ANOTHER GOOD ALBUM ON NITRO RECORDS. JUGHEAD'S REVENGE IS A GOOD BAND, BUT THE LYRICS TO THE SONGS IMPLY THAT THEY ARE THE ONLY REAL PUNKS LEFT. IT STARTS WITH PARLIAMENT OF WHORES, AND IT GOES ON TO OFFEND EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING. 3.5 STARS

17. SUBLIME, BY SUBLIME. RIP, BRAD. SUBLIME'S POSTHUMOUS RELEASE. LEAD SINGER/GUITARIST BRADLEY NOWELL DIED JUST WEEKS BEFORE THE RELEASE OF THIS ALBUM, LEAVING HIS LEGACY AND SON BEHIND. MTV IS STILL PLAYING TRACKS OFF THIS, AND BANDS LIKE SUGAR RAY ARE MAKING A KILLING TRYING TO COPY THEIR UNIQUE STYLE. PUNK-SKA SONGS LIKE WRONG WAY AND SAME IN THE END KICK-ASS, AND WHAT I GOT (REPRISE) IS A CLASSIC, WITH BRAD PREDICTING THE EXACT WAY HE DIED. SOME SUCKY SONGS, BUT STILL A GREAT ALBUM FROM A LATE GREAT BAND. 3 STARS

18. EVERYTHING SUCKS, BY THE DESCENDENTS. MILO RETURNS TO THE DESCENDENTS IN A TRIUMPHANT MANOR. BILL STEVENSON RETURNS AS WELL, AND THE ALBUM IS GOOD. PERHAPS A LITTLE TOO WELL PRODUCED, THE DESCENDENTS JUST AREN'T THE SAME WITHOUT SQUEEKING EQUIPMENT. LOVE SONGS LIKE I'M THE ONE AND SHE LOVES ME COMPLIMENT HARDER SONGS LIKE EVERYTHING SUX, CAUGHT, AND EUNUCH BOY. PUNKS MOST BELOVED GEEK RETURNS IN STRIDE. 3 STARS

19. LOSING STREAK, BY LESS THAN JAKE. ONE OF PUNK-SKA'S LEADING PERSONALITIES, LESS THAN JAKE KEEP PUTTING OUT GOOD ALBUMS. AUTOMATIC AND SUGAR IN YOUR GAS TANK ARE GOOD ORIGINALS, AND THEY HAVE RERECORDED CLASSICS LIKE JOHNNY QUEST THINKS WE'RE SELLOUTS AND JEN DOESN'T LIKE ME ANYMORE. THE HIDDEN TRACK OF HOWIE REYNOLDS IS HYSTERICAL. GOOD PUNK-SKA. 3 STARS

20. HATE YOU, BY THE DAREDEVILS. MR. BRETT MAKES SHITLOADS OF CASH FROM HIS LABEL, EPITAPH, THEN FORMS A POP-PUNK POSEUR BAND TO SELL OUT? YEAH, RIGHT. HATE YOU SOUNDS A LOT LIKE LATER BAD RELIGION SONGS. THIS 7" CONTAINS HATE YOU AND RULES, HEARTS. TWO LOVE SONGS WRITTEN BY MR. BRETT. LEAD GUITARIST GORE VERBINSKI (LITTLE KINGS), DRUMMER JOSH FREEZE (VANDALS), AND BASSIST DEAN OPSETH PROVIDE CAPABLE SUPPORT. 2 STARS

21. HEAVY PETTING ZOO, BY NOFX. ONE OF THE FUNNIEST BANDS OF ALL TIME, FAT MIKE AND NOFX RETURN WITH A LACK OF STYLE. STARTING WITH HOBOPHOBIC AND PROCEEDING ON TO THE HILARIOUS BLEEDING HEART DISEASE, NOFX PROVE THEY HAVEN'T LOST ANYTHING OVER THE YEARS, ESPECIALLY NOT ANY WEIGHT. THEY EVEN HAVE A SEQUEL TO LIZA AND LOUISE, LIZA. 3 STARS

22. FILTHY LUCRE LIVE, BY THE SEX PISTOLS. ANARCHY IN THE U.K. RETURNS. A SELLOUT ALBUM? YES, STILL, THE PRODUCTION OF THIS LIVE ALBUM IS BETTER THAN THEIR PRECEDING ALBUMS. THIS MEANS YOU CAN REALLY HEAR THE SEX PISTOLS AT THEIR BEST. THE ATTITUDE IS STILL THERE, AND ROTTEN IS JUST AS OBNOXIOUS AS HE WAS WHEN SID WAS STILL ALIVE. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN! 3.5 STARS

23. SCARED STRAIGHT, BY THE NEW BOMB TURKS. THE NEW BOMB TURKS HAVE ONE OF THE MOST FANATICAL FOLLOWINGS IN THE HISTORY OF PUNK ROCK. WHY? CUZ THEY'VE GOT GREAT ALBUMS AND KICK-ASS LIVE SHOWS. THIS ALBUM IS NO EXCEPTION. THEY LEFT CRYPT RECORDS FOR EPITAPH, AND THE RESULT IS A BETTER SOUNDING DISC. THE MATERIAL IS ALSO STRONG, WITH HARD, FAST SONGS LIKE HAMMERLESS NAIL AND PROFESSIONAL AGAINSTER, AS WELL AS JAMS LIKE JUKEBOX LEAN AND LOOK ALIVE JIVE. 4 STARS

24. ANTHEMS FROM THE ALLEYWAY, BY TOTAL CHAOS. TOTAL CHAOS PLAYING POSEUR POP-PUNK? YES, TOTAL CHAOS, ONE OF THE LAST HARDCORE BANDS, HAS A NEW POP-PUNK RELEASE. HELL HAS FROZEN OVER AND BEEN AWARDED AN NHL FRANCHISE. THE ONCE COOL RIOT CITY HAS BEEN DOWNGRADED TO THE POSEUR RIOT CITY 2. FANS OF THE OLD TOTAL CHAOS SHOULD NOT GET THIS ALBUM, NOR SHOULD ANYONE. 0.5 STARS

25. ALL SCRATCHED UP!, BY DOWN BY LAW. DAVE SMALLEY'S UNIQUE VISION AND BLEND OF MUSIC IS FULLY REALIZED ON THIS ALBUM BY DOWN BY LAW. CHEAP THRILL, ALL AMERICAN, AND GRUESOME GARY ARE GOOD, AND DOWN BY LAW EXPLORES OTHER TYPES OF MUSIC WITH RADIO RAGGA. COUNTING CROWS MUST DIE AND POST OFFICE LAMENT ARE TRULY FUNNY SONGS. 3.5 STARS

26. ESTEEM DRIVEN ENGINE, BY PULLEY. WHEN SCOTT RADINSKY LEFT TEN FOOT POLE, HE DECIDED TO STICK TO MUSIC. WITH THE MONEY RADINSKY MAKES FROM BASEBALL, HE HAS NO REASON TO SELL OUT, AND HE MOCKS MAJOR LABELS AND SELL OUTS IN THIS EPITAPH ALBUM. CASHED IN IS A GREAT SONG, AND PULLEY DOESN'T LET UP ON LATER TRACKS. THE SONGS ALL START TO SOUND THE SAME, BUT, HEY, IT'S ONLY PUNK ROCK. 3 STARS

27. DESTRUCTION BY DEFINITION, BY THE SUICIDE MACHINES. ONE OF THE BETTER PUNK-SKA BANDS AROUND, THE SUICIDE MACHINES HAVE FINALLY BEEN RECOGNIZED BY MTV AND THE MAJOR RADIO STATIONS, WHO ARE CURRENTLY EXPLOITING THEM. THE ALBUM STARTS OUT STRONG WITH NEW GIRL AND BREAK THE GLASS, AND EVEN GETS INTO SOME METAL WITH HEY. THEY EVEN GET FUNNY WITH VANS SONG. THESE BOYS FROM DETROIT KNOW HOW TO ROCK. 3.5 STARS

28. GO AHEAD PUNK ...MAKE MY DAY, COMP. ON NITRO RECORDS. FIVE BANDS AND TEN TRACKS OF CLASSIC NITRO MUSIC. GUTTERMOUTH, THE VANDALS, AFI, JUGHEAD'S REVENGE, AND THE OFFSPRING CONTRIBUTE TWO TRACKS A PIECE. ALL THE TRACKS ON THIS ARE GOOD. THE OFFSPRING THROW IN THEIR UNRELEASED VERSION OF HEY JOE. 3.5 STARS

29. PUNK-O-RAMA VOL.2, COMP. ON EPITAPH RECORDS. SEVENTEEN TRACKS FROM CLASSIC EPITAPH BANDS AND OLDER BANDS THAT ARE HAVING THEIR ALBUMS RERELEASED ON EPITAPH. RANCID AND NOFX RETURN FROM THE PREVIOUS ALBUM, WHILE TSOL AND POISON IDEA CONTRIBUTE CLASSIC TRACKS. DFL TOSSES IN A GREAT UNRELEASED SONG, THOUGHT CONTROL, AND TSOL'S CODE BLUE IS SURE TO BE SHOCKING EVEN TO THOSE WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH IT. 3.5 STARS

30. BORED GENERATION, COMP. ON EPITAPH RECORDS. THIS COMPILATION HAS SOME GREAT, OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TRACKS, AND IT HAS SOME SHITTY ONES. PENNYWISE DOES AN AWESOME COVER OF DON'T CARE/LIVE FAST, DIE YOUNG. RANCID AND NOFX CHIP IN UNRELEASED SONGS THAT ARE TRULY GREAT. HELMET MAKES ITS FIRST APPEARANCE ON EPITAPH, AND THE BEASTIE BOYS CONTRIBUTE THE HARDCORE SONG NERVOUS ASSISTANT. COOL MULTIMEDIA FUNCTIONS CAN'T MAKE UP FOR THE INCLUSION OF SOME SHITTY RAP SONGS. 3 STARS
